Things to Remember Before Choosing Betta Tank Mates

Betta stays well without tank mates

Recommendations are not the Bible  

Always keep a backup plan  

Bettas are very aggressive and territorial in nature 

At least 20 gallon tank is required to keep other fish with betta

The planted tank is most recommended here

Tank Size - 10-20 gallons

They aren't territorial & perfect as betta tank mates

Nature - Peaceful

Lenght - 1-1.5 inches

At least 10 gallon tank is required to keep betta & ember tetra

They are small enough and betta don't bother of them. 

 The tank should be long instead of tall 

8-10 ember tetra with a short finned betta is okay to keep together

40% of experts  think ember tetras are the best tank mates of betta

Female Guppies

Length - 1.2 - 2.4 inch

Female Guppies are fast & don't have long fins

The male guppies are not allowed because they are colorful & have long tails

colorful female guppies are the bad choice

Female betta & female guppies fit the best

One betta & three guppies in a 10 gallon tank is the thumb rule

Use a tank divider for first few days to check anything wrong

Kuhli loach

Length - 3 - 4 inch

Remain active at night. Clean excess foods & keep the tank clean

Kuhli loaches try to find foods on the substrate most of the time. 

They become unnoticeable to betta because they don't have fins or tails

Lots of hiding spots are required 

At least 6 kuhli loaches are suitable to keep with betta

Kuhli loaches can clean the tank by eating unfed foods of betta

Pleco Fish

Tank Size - As big as possible

Bottom dweller, recommended for large tank

Length - up to 15 inches

Plecos are too peaceful for a betta tank 

Plecos are large according to betta's size. So betta unlikely attack them

Plecos are the very good algae cleaner

Pleco does not has the bright color but has a different level of personality

Pleco stays at the bottom of the tank & betta stays at the middle of the tank.

Length - 1- 2 inches

Otocinclus catfish are very tiny 

They are fragile & shy

Fishkeepers need the experience to keep otocinclus catfish & betta together

At least 6 catfish are required to keep them healthy. 

They are the bottom feeders

Amano shrimps are very tiny

A heavily planted tank is good enough for both of them

They are the fantastic algae eaters

Betta has long fins & they don't nip fins

At least 15-20 gallon tank is required to keep betta & neon tetra

Betta can't eat tetra's food but tetra can eat betta's food easily

 The tank should be long enough and has some adequet depth 

10-12 neon tetra with a short finned betta is okay to keep together

A planted tank is the must here
